It's incredible to think that The Language House is on our 20th anniversary. It's been an amazing journey since we opened our doors in 2004.

This engaging ESL icebreaker is one of my favorites to do on the first day of a new language class. If you're teaching a language, this is great for B1 and above. Everyone loves a murder mystery. What better way to start your class than to have your students become detectives and solve a crime. Check out the video to learn all of the methodology and steps needed to pull the icebreaker off, alon...

I have a question Chris. How exactly do you elicit and use visuals to teach the verbs and sentences? Do you use actual images of the verb in action (i.e. for "to wear", someone... wearing clothes? LOL). I am trying to plan a beginner class for a private student and I've got "Where are you from?" as a goal question, for example. How would you teach this vocab?

These are perfect tips, and "knowing/mastering the subject that you are teaching always, always worked for me. My students in high school and at the university where I teach as an adjunct love it when they see that I know what the heck I'm teaching and make them part of the studies and subject at hand. Benefits both of us.

I don't totally agree with your methods of teaching English I'm sorry to say. You failed to mention some very important things that will make or break you as a educator. Most language schools preach the same rhetoric and the results varies greatly. The key points you speak about are all great and I would think most teachers are aware of these buy the time they acquire their teaching credentials and Teachers must have a passion for learning. It never ends. During the start of the school I give a all the students a 30 question quiz. This will highlight their strengths and weaknesses. Next I observe all the children, they way they interact, their interests and so on. And you must speak English all the time. 14:43 But the most important thing is... you need to touch their hearts, you need to listen to them. Give them hugs and praise, when talking to them rest your hand on their shoulder. And when a certain lever of trust is attained, they will open up to you. Next very important fact is, their home life. This plays a major roll in their learning and how well they do in class.!! What happens at home will greatly hamper a child's learning. Be their friend, laugh and joke around with them. Treat them like real people and they will bloom like a beautiful flower. Take this one English teacher I've been helping. Students who are grown up and moved on in their life still retires to visit her. When she walk on the the school grounds students will call out her name from all over. 10, 20 years later they haven't forgotten her. Many of her students have become teachers as well and three months ago, one of her students now teaches at the same school. Her school is not a prestige school or has the funds to hire native English teachers. But these children has been on TV, won many English competitions and so on. All because the teacher cared and listen to them, not by controlling them. I've been to many many seminars, attended numerous Ted-Talk classes to maybe open my eyes to new ideas. And share what I learned with them. Sorry got carried away.
